The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has notified Network Service Providers of the Postponement of the upcoming changes to Root Zone Domain Name System Security Extensions (DNSSEC) by the Internet Corporation of Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN).
The Commission notified the Network Service Providers via a Public Notice statement, it issued yesterday and signed by Tony Ojobo, Director, Public Affairs.
The statement noted that ICANN had to postpone the root zone rollover of the KSK, which was originally scheduled to take place on 11th October, 2017 due to some recently obtained data that showed that a significant number of resolvers used by Internet Service Providers (ISPs) and Network Operators (NOs) are not yet ready for the Key Rollover.
“The Nigerian Communications Commission is using this opportunity to inform the Internet Service Providers and Network Operators within the country that are using DNSSEC validation on their network to prepare and ensure they are ready for the upcoming ‘rollover’, likely to be rescheduled for first quarter, 2018,” NCC said.
According to ICANN, changing the key involves generating a new cryptographic key pair and distributing the new public component to the DNSSEC validating resolvers. Based on the estimated number of Internet users worldwide who use DNSSEC validating resolvers, an estimated one-in-four global Internet users, or 750 million Internet users, could be affected by the KSK rollover.
ICANN will provide additional information as soon as it is available and the new Key Roll date will be announced as appropriate.
