A highlight of a 2018 cybersecurity report presented yesterday in Lagos, has shown that 70 percent of companies in Nigeria faced talent shortage of cybersecurity professionals in 2019, even as $800 million was reported to have been lost to cybercrime in 2018.
The report, which was presented by Demadiur Systems Limited in partnership with Kenya based Seriamu, also highlighted that there is a skill shortage at senior management and mid-management level with just 3500 cybersecurity skill professionals in Nigeria.
This, the report noted always leads to some constraints when recruiting cybersecurity personnel as a result of the lack of technical experience and certifications.
Other highlights in the report, which was presented by Mr. Ikechukwu Nnamani, Chairman of Demadiur Systems, show an increase in organizational spend on cybersecurity in 2017 to 2018 as 17 percent of respondents say they spend $5000 on cybersecurity products.
There was 21.3 percent of cybercrime reported to the police, out of which a meager 2.6 percent was successfully prosecuted.
The 2018 Cybersecurity survey provides insights into what Nigerian organizations are doing to protect their information and assets in light of increasing cyber-attacks and compromises impacting them.
The report was presented at the Nigeria Cybersecurity Summit in Lagos, which was well attended by stakeholders form the financial services companies, government institutions, telecommunication firms and financial technology companies operating in the country.
