The Cyber Security Experts Association of Nigeria (CSEAN) has called on the federal government to adopt sophisticated and available technology solutions to address the lingering insecurity in the country, where many lives and properties have been lost.

The President of CSEAN, Mr. Remi Afon made the call this week during the 2022 Cyber Secure Nigeria conference in Abuja.

He argued that with the latest technology solutions such as GPS tracking, drones, artificial intelligence (AI), digital forensic investigation, and lawful interception of electronic communication and social media, the menace of insecurity will be greatly reduced and ultimately, eradicated.

“In tackling the nation’s security challenges, GPS tracking, drones, artificial intelligence (AI), digital forensic investigation, lawful interception of electronic communication and social media could be proactively deployed to check insecurity,” he advised.

With the theme: “Cybersecurity: An imperative in tackling insecurity in Nigeria”, Remi stated that criminal elements proved to be resilient and adaptive to traditional security techniques and counter-measures.

“It is about time government takes a technological approach to resolving the overwhelming security challenges because every a crime is committed – be it terrorism or kidnapping, it is preceded by a planning stage,” he added.

According to him, funding of terrorism, through traditional financial systems or cryptocurrency, could also be tracked provided appropriate tools and actionable intelligence from financial institutions are in place.

Meanwhile, the National Security Adviser, Major General Babagana Monguno (rtd) has assured us that Nigeria is presently deploying robust Information Technology systems to aid security agencies across the country.

He stated that his office had been engaging local and international partners to optimize the capacity of security and law enforcement agencies for enhanced productivity.

The NSA, who was represented at the event by Maj. Gen. Akesode Samad, said with the application of robust IT systems, a lot more could be achieved in this regard as IT will continue to play a critical role in aiding the success of law enforcement agencies across the globe.

He also stated that Federal Government is also making efforts to implement the Cybercrimes Act 2015 with the establishment of ngCERT and National Digital Forensic Laboratory. This, according to him, will ensure the safety and security of Nigeria’s cyberspace as well as provide timely support to security and law enforcement agencies.
