The organizer of the annual rebranded Africa’s Beacon of Information and |Communications Technology award, Nigeria Communications Week has declared Medallion Data Centres Limited as the most connected data centre in Nigeria.

Declaring Medallion at the award ceremony held at the prestigious Oriental Hotel in Lagos, the oragniser said Medallion has distinguished itself from competitors with over 70 percent of all Internet traffic at the Nigeria Internet Exchange.

“It is an honour to declare Medallion Data Centres Limited as the most connected data centre in Nigeria,” said Mr. Ken Nwogbo, Founder and Editor-in-Chief of Nigeria Communications Week at the event, which attracted stakeholders from the public and private sector, including political leaders.

He noted that declaring Medallion Data Centres Limited as the most connected data centre in Nigeria is an industry declaration as the selection was made by industry watchers and analysts.

According to him, the selection of Medallion by industry stakeholders may not be unconnected to the fact that Medallion presently has the highest concentration of operational international submarine fiber operators such as MainOne, Glo1, SAT3, WACs and others.

Meanwhile, a visibly elated Chief Executive Officer of Medallion Data Centres, Engr. Ikechukwu Nnamani has assured that while the company is glad to be recognized, it will continue to deploy infrastructure to power the digital economy, saying going digital is the way to go as has been done in some developed economies.

“We appreciate Nigeria Communications Week and other industry leaders for this recognition. We do not take it for granted. We will continue to expand infrastructure to be able to achieve a fully digital economy,” he said in his response after receiving the award on behalf of Medallion.

Also speaking on the sideline, Engr. Nnamani argued that some of the investments into infrastructure in Nigeria are beginning to yield results, assing that in the next three years, the country will begin to get the full benefits of such foreign investments.

This is even as he highlighted that some teething challenges hindering the growth and benefits of investments into the industry remained. One of such challenges is  poor implementation of policy on local hosting of data, which he argued is presently impacting negatively on data centre operations.

He argued that implementing the policy on local hosting, which requires all content producers, including government agencies to host all subscriber and consumer data in Nigeria, will help drive demand as some people for whatever reason are still hosting their content outside.
