As World Lung Cancer Day is observed globally, AstraZeneca is highlighting its ongoing efforts to combat the disease in Africa, a region heavily burdened by late-stage diagnoses and limited access to advanced care.

Lung cancer remains a leading cause of cancer death worldwide, with a particularly devastating impact on Africa. The continent faces a crisis with over 90% of cases detected at advanced stages, resulting in a dismal five-year survival rate of less than 1%. Early detection is crucial to improving these grim statistics.

AstraZeneca is committed to transforming lung cancer care in Africa through a multi-pronged approach encompassing prevention, early detection, patient advocacy, and access to advanced treatments. Key initiatives include:

    • Connect to Care: A collaboration with Axios International designed to streamline the diagnostic process for lung cancer patients, ensuring timely and accurate diagnoses.
    • Diagnostic Patient Navigation: A program supporting patients from initial suspicion to confirmed diagnosis, facilitating access to diagnostic facilities, providing essential information, and ensuring proper tissue handling for EGFR testing.
    • EGFR Testing: Partnership with Aga Khan University Hospital to establish EGFR testing capabilities, addressing fragmented cancer diagnostics in Kenya and building a referral network for efficient diagnosis and treatment.
    • Molecular Testing in Nigeria: Collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Health to introduce molecular testing, enabling more precise lung cancer diagnoses and improving treatment outcomes.

“Our mission is to bridge the gap in lung cancer care across Africa,” said Deepak Arora, African Cluster Country President at AstraZeneca. “By improving access to diagnostics and treatments, we aim to transform the landscape of lung cancer outcomes on the continent.”

Dr Khomotso Mashilane, Medical Director at AstraZeneca, emphasized the importance of early detection and precise diagnosis. “Our initiatives are designed to streamline the diagnostic pathway and enhance patient care,” she said. “We are committed to leveraging our expertise to bring advanced diagnostic capabilities to more regions.”

AstraZeneca’s dedication to improving lung cancer outcomes in Africa is underscored by its commitment to equitable healthcare access and patient advocacy. Through awareness, early detection, and advanced treatments, the company aims to change the trajectory of this disease on the continent.
