The Executive Secretary/CEO of the National Institute for Cultural Orientation (NICO), Otunba Biodun Ajiboye, has emphasized the importance of preserving Nigeria’s cultural identity in the face of globalization and the digital age.

In a keynote address delivered at the Digivation Future Summit 2024 in Lagos last week, Ajiboye highlighted the challenges posed by the influx of foreign cultures and the erosion of traditional values in Nigeria.

He stressed that while globalization can offer opportunities for cultural exchange, it is essential to ensure that Nigeria’s unique cultural heritage is not lost in the process.

“We must resist the temptation to discard our cultural values. Instead, we should engage with globalization and the digital economy as opportunities to reprioritize and revitalize our cultural heritage,” he advised.

The NICO executive called for the development of local content that reflects Nigeria’s diverse cultures and languages. He also emphasized the need for collaboration between government, corporate entities, and cultural organizations to promote cultural preservation and innovation in the digital age.

According to Ajiboye, by embracing both globalization and technology while preserving its cultural identity, Nigeria can position itself as a leader in the global cultural and digital landscape,
