The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) have formally signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen consumer protection within the telecommunications industry.

This collaboration underscores the commitment of both institutions to safeguarding the interests of Nigerian consumers.

“Today marks the beginning of a strategic partnership between two crucial regulatory bodies, both dedicated to enhancing the well-being of Nigerians through fair competition and robust consumer protection frameworks,” stated Dr. Aminu Maida, Executive Vice Chairman of NCC, during the signing ceremony in Abuja.

In the face of rapid technological advancements, collaboration between regulatory agencies is paramount. The telecommunications sector plays a pivotal role in Nigeria’s economic and social progress, making such cooperation essential.

Dr. Maida emphasized that the MoU reflects the NCC’s vision of fostering a transparent, competitive, and consumer-centric telecommunications industry.

“By combining our efforts, the NCC and FCCPC aim to minimize regulatory uncertainty and create a clearer landscape for all stakeholders in the communications sector, aligning with the Federal Government’s Ease of Doing Business objectives,” he added.

Mr. Tunji Bello, Executive Vice Chairman of the FCCPC, highlighted the interconnected nature of the two agencies.

He explained, “The relationship between the FCCPC and the NCC is inherently intertwined. This ensures that if one agency encounters limitations in identifying or addressing a consumer issue or regulatory violation, the other agency can effectively intervene with a different perspective.”

Mr. Bello further emphasized that overlapping regulations are designed to prevent issues from falling through the cracks. “This MoU represents a significant step in simplifying the consumer experience by streamlining interactions with government agencies on related matters,” he added.

“The signing of this MoU symbolizes the convergence of two dedicated government agencies in fulfilling their legal obligations to eliminate regulatory gaps within the telecoms industry,” he concluded.
