The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has streamlined the process for Nigerians to modify their date of birth on their National Identification Number (NIN) through its official self-service portal, outlining eight clear steps. This initiative, detailed in a press release by Dr. Kayode Adegoke, Head of Corporate Communications at NIMC, aims to enhance data security and integrity while providing convenience to users.
The eight steps for date of birth modification, as provided by NIMC, are as follows:
- Verify your NIN and log in to the self-service portal: Access the portal at Selfservicemodification.nimc.gov.ng.
- Select the date of birth modification option from the dashboard.
- Complete the payment via Paystack.
- Enter your National Population Commission (NPC) certificate number and validate it. The system will automatically populate your date of birth, rendering it non-editable. For those who have lost their birth certificate, a birth attestation can be completed at nationalpopulation.org.ng.
- Upload your NPC certificate and any supporting documents.
- Submit the modification request and review the changes.
- Tick the attestation box before final submission.
- Receive a modification transaction slip upon submission.
NIMC emphasized that these modifications should only be conducted through its official portal, Selfservicemodification.nimc.gov.ng, to safeguard against data breaches and identity theft. “The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) wishes to state that in order to ensure the security and integrity of your National Identification Number (NIN) data, modifications can only be done on the official NIMC self-service portal: Selfservicemodification.nimc.gov.ng,” the commission stated, warning against unauthorized websites.
The agency highlighted the security and reliability of its self-service portal, assuring Nigerians that their data is protected. The portal also offers the convenience of updating information remotely, eliminating the need for physical visits to enrollment centers.
Key Requirements and Procedures:
- For date of birth modifications, individuals born before 1992 must provide a digitized NPC attestation certificate, while those born after 1992 require a digitized NPC birth certificate.
- If a birth certificate is lost, users must complete the birth attestation process online at nationalpopulation.org.ng.
- Upon approval, a new NIN slip will be sent to the user’s email, and it can be printed from the dashboard.
- NIMC also detailed the documents required for other modifications such as name, address and phone number.
NIMC’s initiative aims to provide a secure and efficient method for Nigerians to update their NIN information, ensuring the accuracy and integrity of national identity data.
