In a significant move to enhance student flexibility, Coventry University is set to revolutionize its course delivery by adopting a six-intake system across the academic year for all campus-based studies. This innovative approach replaces the traditional term and semester model with focused six-week teaching blocks, marking a considerable shift in the higher education landscape.

The Coventry University Group has already established a strong foundation in block teaching through its CU Coventry, CU Scarborough, and CU London (Dagenham and Greenwich) campuses. While other institutions have begun to explore similar models, Coventry University’s comprehensive rollout signifies a commitment to this approach on an unprecedented scale.

The transition will commence in September 2025 with postgraduate taught programs moving to the six-intake structure. Undergraduate courses are slated to follow in September 2026. This change is expected to create opportunities for accelerated degree pathways and potentially increase student enrollment by offering more accessible entry points throughout the year.

This new system will empower students with the flexibility to commence their studies at various times, breaking away from the constraints of traditional academic calendars. Furthermore, it will enable the University Group to sustain smaller, specialized courses that might otherwise be discontinued, while simultaneously providing students with greater choice in their start dates.

Under the six-week block model, learning will be concentrated, followed by a dedicated seventh week for assessment. Modules will be delivered on a carousel basis, ensuring that students can begin their academic journey at the intake period that aligns best with their individual circumstances.

Coventry University has a history of embracing innovation, and this latest development underscores its commitment to student success and satisfaction. The University believes that this flexible structure will better support student progression and completion rates.

Prof. John Latham CBE, Vice-Chancellor of Coventry University and Group CEO, emphasized the student-centric nature of this change: “These changes are all about giving added flexibility to students who want to benefit from the qualifications Coventry University Group is able help them achieve. Having witnessed the success and popularity of the six-week teaching block model at our CU campuses, we are now extending this approach across all our locations.”

He further added, “Our primary focus is on equipping our students for successful careers, and we are confident that this increased flexibility will not only support their academic journeys but also open up the transformative possibilities of higher education to a wider range of individuals.”
