Facing a recent decline in its subscriber base, MultiChoice, the parent company of DStv and GOtv, has announced a 50% reduction in the price of its decoders, bringing the cost down from N20,000 to N10,000.
The South African entertainment giant stated that this move is part of a broader initiative to encourage customers and enhance the value of their subscriptions. “We are announcing the reduction of our decoder price to N10,000 from N20,000. The 50% slash is part of our effort to regain customers amid the recent decline in subscribers,” said John Ugbe, CEO of MultiChoice Nigeria.
In addition to the price cut, MultiChoice is offering customers a free upgrade to a new DStv package tier for those who pay their current subscriptions in full between June 16 and July 31, 2025. This initiative aims to retain existing subscribers in a competitive market increasingly dominated by streaming services like Netflix and YouTube.
The company also highlighted that this initiative is a response to the current economic challenges faced by Nigerians, acknowledging a significant decrease in purchasing power. By repositioning itself as a platform for daily value, DStv intends to encourage content discovery across a wider range of genres, including movies, drama, kids’ programming, and news.
This comes after MultiChoice Group reported a decline of 1.2 million active subscribers, dropping to 14.5 million in its latest financial results for the year ended March 31, 2025.
MultiChoice’s “We’ve Got You” offer, designed for both current and returning subscribers, seeks to reward loyal customers and attract new ones by making premium content more accessible. The company stated that the upgrade to the new tier will be automatic for all active and returning subscribers who renew their subscriptions during the specified period. “This means more channels, more shows, and more reasons to tune in every day,” the company added.
John Ugbe reiterated the company’s commitment to its customers: “We want to ensure our customers feel appreciated and have access to the best entertainment every day. The ‘We Got You’ campaign is about making premium content more accessible and showing that DStv offers something for everyone, not just football fans.”
