Africa’s debt burden: A threat to potential, says Adesina

The African Development Bank President, Akinwumi Adesina, has warned that Africa’s massive debt of $824 billion, along with a lack of transparency in resource-backed loans, is hindering the continent’s economic potential. Adesina believes that Africa needs debt transparency and accountability measures to move forward.

Speaking at the Semafor Africa Summit during the International Monetary Fund and World Bank Spring Meetings, Adesina highlighted the sharp rise in debt service payments. African nations are projected to pay a staggering $74 billion this year, compared to just $17 billion in 2010.

“It’s crucial to establish debt transparency and accountability,” Adesina emphasized. “We need to end the practice of opaque resource-backed loans.”

These non-transparent loans, according to Adesina, are undermining Africa’s vast economic potential. The lack of transparency makes it difficult to resolve debt issues and hinders future growth for many African countries.

Adesina called for a more structured and predictable approach to managing Africa’s debt. He pointed out the concerning fact that many African nations are dedicating a significant portion of their GDP, 65%, solely to servicing their loan obligations.
