Five compelling factors have been identified for why Nigeria must prioritize storage, processing and data analysis within its borders, as it pushes for national digital economy prosperity. These factors if followed diligently, will propel Nigeria’s digital economy to new heights.

This becomes necessary going by the fact that,  in the age of information, data has become the new oil, fueling innovation and economic growth in Nigeria, Africa’s largest economy. The domestication of data is poised to take a significant leap forward in the digital revolution.

These five factors according to ITPulse’s findings are economic growth, improved decision-making, enhanced security and privacy, sovereignty and control and job creation.

    Explainer:

Economic Growth: many innovators and entrepreneurs rely on to drive their businesses. By keeping it local, these innovators and entrepreneurs can boost their data-driven businesses across various sectors, from agriculture and healthcare to finance and e-commerce.

Improved Decision-Making: With data readily available, businesses can get valuable insights that can inform better decision-making at all levels. Government institutions can leverage domestic data to design targeted policies, optimize resource allocation, and improve service delivery. Businesses can gain a deeper understanding of customer behavior, market trends, and competitor activity, enabling them to make data-driven strategic decisions.

Enhanced Security and Privacy: Storing data offshore raises concerns about security breaches and unauthorized access. Data domestication allows Nigeria to implement stricter data governance regulations and oversight mechanisms, protecting the privacy of its citizens and businesses. This fosters trust in the digital ecosystem, encouraging wider participation and innovation.

Sovereignty and Control: Data is a form of national power. By keeping data local, Nigeria asserts greater control over its digital destiny. This empowers the nation to set its own data governance frameworks and avoid potential exploitation by foreign entities.

Job Creation: Data localization necessitates the development of robust data infrastructure and a skilled workforce for data management, analysis, and security.  This creates new employment opportunities in data centers, cloud computing, cybersecurity, and data science, contributing to a more diversified and knowledge-based economy
