The report, titled “The Digital Opportunity of Nigeria,” unveiled earlier today by Google and conducted by Public First, revealed the substantial economic impact of digital technologies in Nigeria.

The report highlights how Google’s products and infrastructure drive digital transformation and contribute to significant economic growth across the country.

    Four Key Findings:

    • Massive ROI: Every $1 invested in digital technology in Nigeria generates over $8 in economic value. This underscores the sector’s high return on investment.
    • Google’s Impact: In 2023 alone, Google’s products and services, including Search, Ads, YouTube, and Cloud, contributed an estimated $1.8 billion to Nigeria’s economy.
    • Digital Skills Development: Google’s digital skills programs have helped millions of Nigerians acquire new digital competencies. Over 1.5 million young adults will learn new digital skills in 2023.
    • AI’s Economic Potential: The report estimates that AI could boost Nigeria’s economy by an additional $15 billion by 2030. Google’s commitment to responsible AI development is expected to be crucial in realizing this potential.

Meanwhile, Google has invested $1 billion to accelerate Africa’s digital economy, focusing on improving internet access, supporting local entrepreneurs, and fostering innovation. The Nigeria Digital Opportunity report showcases the tangible results of these investments.

The report also offers strategic recommendations to policymakers, advocating for increased cloud adoption, enhanced digital infrastructure, stronger STEM education, and AI fluency to prepare Nigeria’s workforce for the future.

Commenting, Olumide Balogun, Director, West Africa at Google said: “We’re delighted to see the positive impact digital technology is having on Nigeria’s economy. This report emphasizes the importance of continued investment in digital skills and infrastructure to unlock the full potential of Nigeria’s vibrant digital economy.”

Also, Amy Price, Director & Head of Technology Policy at Public First stated: “Nigeria is a digital leader in Africa, and tech investment will be a powerful catalyst for further growth and development. This is especially true when it comes to connectivity, cloud computing, and artificial intelligence.”

The report’s findings reinforce Nigeria’s position as a digital frontrunner in Africa and highlight the immense potential of the country’s tech sector to drive economic growth and development.
