MTN Nigeria, the leading telecommunications company, has emerged as a significant driver of the nation’s economic growth, contributing a substantial 7% to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
MTN Nigeria CEO, Karl Toriola disclosed this recently while speaking at the prestigious TeXcellence 2024 conference, where he highlighted the telecom sector’s pivotal role in advancing Nigeria’s digital economy. He emphasized that MTN’s evolution into a technology company (Techco) positions it to propel the nation to unprecedented economic heights.
Toriola reflected on MTN’s journey from the early days of GSM licensing to the deployment of 5G technology. He acknowledged the shift in revenue dynamics, with data services now surpassing voice as the primary revenue driver.
Despite challenges such as increased competition and economic pressures, MTN remains committed to innovation. The company is investing heavily in areas like financial inclusion, IoT, AI, and the development of robust digital ecosystems.
Ambitious Projects and Digital Inclusion
MTN is undertaking ambitious projects, including the construction of West Africa’s largest data center and the expansion of 5G services. Toriola emphasized the importance of affordability in expanding digital access, recognizing that a significant portion of the Nigerian population faces challenges in maintaining regular internet connectivity due to cost constraints.
A Collaborative Future
To fully realize Nigeria’s digital potential, Toriola called for collaboration among industry stakeholders, international partners, and the government. He highlighted the crucial role of human capital, emphasizing the need to nurture a culture of curiosity and innovation.
“Our biggest asset is our people—their drive and ingenuity. By fostering this and investing in our digital infrastructure, we can achieve the vision of a trillion-dollar economy,” Toriola concluded.
With a market share of over 50% and a strong commitment to innovation, MTN Nigeria continues to shape the future of Nigeria’s digital landscape.
