A recent report by Duplo, a leading provider of financial technology solutions in Africa, has shed light on the pressing issue of talent retention within Nigeria’s finance sector. The survey, which polled 593 finance professionals, revealed significant concerns around compensation, economic instability, and a lack of adequate training support.

    Key Findings:

    • Compensation Dissatisfaction: Nearly 60% of respondents expressed dissatisfaction with their current compensation, highlighting the need for inflation-adjusted salaries and more competitive packages.
    • Economic Instability and ‘Japa’: Economic volatility and the ‘Japa’ phenomenon (emigration) were identified as major threats to talent retention.
    • Impact of Salary Negotiation: Professionals who regularly negotiate their salaries reported higher satisfaction levels, emphasizing the importance of effective negotiation skills.
    • Training and Development: While 79% of respondents had received some form of professional training, only 12% had received financial support from their employers. This suggests a significant gap in employer-sponsored training and development.
    • In-Demand Skills: Finance professionals are encouraged to acquire in-demand skills such as digital finance, data analytics, and compliance to enhance their earning potential.

    Recommendations:

To address these challenges and retain top talent, the report suggests that organizations should:

    • Implement Inflation-Adjusted Compensation Packages: To mitigate the impact of economic instability and rising inflation.
    • Offer Innovative Benefits: Such as flexible work arrangements, performance-based incentives, and adequate technology solutions.
    • Invest in Employee Training and Development: To empower employees, enhance their skills, and foster a culture of continuous learning.
    • Prioritize Talent Retention Strategies: To combat the ‘Japa’ trend and retain valuable talent.

By implementing these recommendations, organizations can create a more attractive and rewarding work environment, ultimately leading to improved employee satisfaction, productivity, and long-term success.
