The United States and Nigeria have signed a $2,095,000 grant to assess the feasibility of deploying at least 90,000 kilometers of new fiber optic backbone infrastructure across Nigeria. This significant step, announced during the inaugural U.S.-Nigeria Technology Dialogue, aims to bolster Nigeria’s digital transformation efforts.

Led by Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell, the Technology Dialogue brought together high-level officials from both nations, including Nigerian Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy Bosun Tijani. The event followed several high-level engagements between the two countries, including the sixth U.S.-Nigeria Binational Commission and a series of events focused on artificial intelligence.

This U.S. Trade and Development Agency-funded project directly supports Nigeria’s National Broadband Plan, which targets a 70% broadband penetration rate and aims to connect at least 90% of the population to affordable and reliable broadband.

The Technology Dialogue encompassed a wide range of critical technology areas, including:

    • Enhancing the resilience and security of essential services and facilities.
    • Promoting digital trade, e-commerce, and innovation-driven economic growth.
    • Developing a skilled workforce to meet the demands of the digital age.
    • Expanding the U.S.-Nigeria AI partnership.
    • Promoting information integrity.

The event also featured a roundtable discussion with industry leaders from both countries, exploring opportunities for public-private partnerships and investments in innovation and digital talent development.

Furthermore, the U.S. and Nigeria agreed to host a virtual expert exchange on AI-enabled biotechnology, focusing on how these technologies can address global health, food security, and scientific advancements in sub-Saharan Africa.

This significant collaboration demonstrates the commitment of both nations to strengthening their technological partnership and fostering a more digitally connected and prosperous future for Nigeria.
