Google recently announced a new set of investments in Africa, reaffirming its nearly two-decade-long commitment to the continent’s digital transformation. The new initiatives focus on three key areas: expanded connectivity, empowering youth through AI, and bolstering skills training.

    Three key announcements

    1. New Subsea Cable Hubs: Google is building four strategic subsea cable hubs in the north, south, east, and west regions of Africa. This initiative is part of Google’s Africa Connect infrastructure programme and is designed to create new digital corridors within the continent and with the rest of the world. According to Google, this investment will deepen international connectivity, improve network resilience, and spur economic growth.
    2. Free AI Tools for Students: To empower Africa’s next generation, Google is offering free one-year subscriptions to the Google AI Pro plan for college students (18 or older). This will initially be available in Egypt, Ghana, Kenya, Morocco, Nigeria, South Africa, Rwanda, and Zimbabwe. The subscription provides students with advanced AI tools, including Deep Research for in-depth reports and Gemini 2.5 Pro for help with assignments and writing.
    3. Funding for Universities: Google is providing an additional $9 million in funding for African universities and research institutions over the next year. This is on top of the over $17 million in funding, curriculum, and access to advanced AI models the company has already provided over the last four years. The goal is to strengthen local capacity and equip people with critical AI skills.

According to Google’s Managing Director for Africa, Alex Okosi, the new investments are a “unified investment into the upward trajectory of the continent.” He stated that Google is committed to providing the infrastructure, tools, and financial support necessary for Africa’s youth to innovate and build a thriving digital world. These initiatives build on Google’s long-term investments in Africa, which have already helped 100 million Africans get online for the first time and trained over 7 million people in digital skills.
