Lagride, the e-hailing service backed by the Lagos State government, announced a major fleet expansion today, adding 100 new electric vehicles (EVs) as part of an ambitious plan to capture 70% of the city’s e-hailing market.

The company stated that the 100 new EVs are the first batch of a broader initiative to introduce over 3,000 electric vehicles within the next three years. This move is designed to support Lagos State’s shift towards cleaner and smarter urban mobility, while directly competing with established e-hailing giants like Uber, Bolt, and InDrive.

According to Lagride, the new EVs feature an impressive range of 333 kilometers on a single charge. This range is sufficient for a round trip between Lagos and Ibadan, a key selling point aimed at alleviating common “range anxiety” concerns among potential users.

Speaking at a media briefing, Lagride’s PR and Communications Lead, Ifeanyi Abraham, emphasized that Lagos is aligning with global transport standards seen in major hubs like Dubai, where government-backed taxi services prioritize safety, affordability, and reliability. “We are now moving decisively in the same direction with professional driver training, technology that serves the public, and vehicles that protect the environment,” Abraham said.

He also confirmed that the company carefully selected the EVs to ensure they are well-suited for Lagos’s busy transport system and that its mobile applications will be updated to allow riders to choose between a petrol or an electric vehicle when booking a ride.

Lagride’s Executive Director, Adeniyi Saliu, highlighted the economic benefits of the expansion, stating that the EV rollout is a key part of the Lagos State government’s economic transformation agenda. He pointed to benefits such as reduced emissions, lower wait times, and improved reliability during peak hours.

Saliu also revealed that the company’s expansion is designed to create thousands of jobs in driver training, maintenance, and fleet operations. He noted that Lagride is the first company in Nigeria to introduce electric vehicles for this kind of operation. To support drivers, the company is offering flexible vehicle ownership pathways, with payment plans ranging from 18 months to four years to boost driver earnings and improve livelihoods.

“Our plan, objectively, is to take at least 70% of this market because of the scale of our investments in assets, infrastructure, and people,” Saliu concluded.
