Galaxy Backbone bridges digital divide in 13 underserved communities

Galaxy Backbone Limited (GBB) has successfully extended high-speed broadband connectivity to 13 underserved institutions and communities across Nigeria. This 2025 milestone marks a pivotal shift in the agency’s strategy: moving beyond commercial hubs to ensure the “digital backbone” supports the nation’s most critical, yet often overlooked, sectors.

GBB’s deployment was not random. The agency targeted institutions with high productivity potential but low commercial readiness, effectively “subsidizing” the digital future of public administration and education.

    The expansion includes:

    • 3 Federal Universities: Empowering the next generation of researchers and students.
    • 8 Federal Secretariats: Modernizing the engine of civil service through paperless administration.
    • 2 Local Government Areas (LGAs): Bringing governance closer to the grassroots via digital service delivery.
    • Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport: Enhancing the digital gateway for global mobility and trade.

This initiative is a tangible execution of the Integrated Digital Transformation Strategy (IDTS), which specifically complements federal programmes like Project 774, which aims to connect every local government area and university hostel in the country.

By integrating these communities into the national grid, GBB is shifting the narrative of broadband from a “luxury service” to a “utility for all.”

Galaxy Backbone views its mission as far more significant than simply laying fiber optic cables. The agency intends for these deployments to stimulate innovation by providing the essential bandwidth needed for local tech ecosystems to flourish. Furthermore, the initiative aims to enhance governance by migrating physical processes to the cloud, thereby reducing the overall cost of public services. Ultimately, the project seeks to foster inclusivity by ensuring that a citizen’s geographic location no longer dictates their level of access to the digital economy.

“Every new connection brings Nigeria closer to a more inclusive digital economy. We are building the platform upon which government institutions and communities can confidently build their digital future,” Galaxy Backbone said in a statement.

As Nigeria pushes toward its 2030 digital literacy and connectivity targets, GBB remains the primary architect of the nation’s shared services. With additional phases of the 2025 deployment already in progress, the agency is signaling that the “digital divide” is finally beginning to close.
