The First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has commissioned a strategic Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Centre in Benue State, established in partnership with the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA).

Located in Ihugh, Vandeikya Local Government Area, the Community IT Centre is designed to promote digital inclusion, human capital development, and digital empowerment, essential tools for citizens to thrive in an increasingly technology-driven world.

Speaking at the ceremony, Senator Tinubu noted that the centre is designed to provide access to digital literacy, innovation, and entrepreneurship opportunities, with a particular focus on women and young people.

“The idea behind the ICT centre is to expand access to digital infrastructure and opportunities, particularly in underserved communities,” she said.

She urged residents of the community to utilize the facility effectively and ensure its sustainability for the benefit of future generations. The First Lady also disclosed that the Ihugh IT Centre is the fourth facility established in partnership with her Renewed Hope Initiative, following similar successful projects in Bauchi, Kwara, and Oyo states.

In addition to the tech hub, the First Lady announced a ₦100 million grant to support 2,000 women petty traders in the area, reaffirming the Renewed Hope Initiative’s commitment to improving livelihoods and fostering inclusive economic development.

In his address, the Director General of NITDA, Kashifu Inuwa, described the IT centre as a catalyst for transformation that will enable residents to acquire critical digital skills, access emerging technologies, and participate meaningfully in the digital economy.

He explained that the centre will serve as a hub for learning, innovation, and enterprise development, providing unique opportunities for students, entrepreneurs, and local farmers.

“Digital tools can significantly enhance agricultural activities by providing access to data-driven solutions such as weather forecasting, soil analysis, and precision farming techniques, helping farmers improve output and profitability,” Inuwa noted.

Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, commended the project, describing it as a landmark intervention that opens new pathways for education, innovation, entrepreneurship, and employment in the state. He assured stakeholders of the state government’s unalloyed commitment to providing the necessary infrastructure and security to ensure the centre’s long-term sustainability.

The commissioning of the Ihugh Community IT Centre underscores ongoing federal and state efforts to bridge the digital divide, expand access to technology, and drive inclusive economic growth across Nigeria.
