Fix your servers: Nigerians blast INEC on X after voter registration portal crashes on day one

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) trended for all the wrong reasons on X yesterday, after its highly anticipated Self-Service Voter Registration Portal crashed within hours of its launch.

What was supposed to be a milestone in digital democracy quickly devolved into a wave of public frustration. Angry, anxious, and skeptical Nigerians flooded X to call out the commission for poor preparation, especially given a tight July 26, 2026, deadline that leaves voters with less than three weeks to register.

The backlash was intensified by INEC’s own aggressive social media campaign, which widely shared a graphic promising citizens they could start and finish their registration on their phone without visiting an INEC office.

When users rushed to cvr.inecnigeria.org only to be met with error screens and frozen pages, the reaction on X was instant and unforgiving.

What Nigerians are saying on X

Regarding the technical glitches, users immediately noticed that the promised features were missing or broken. For instance, @ImmanuelMiles complained that self-registration was not active yet, while another user, @PreshUgwueze, questioned the readiness of the portal by asking when they should expect the update for complete online registration to show.

This day-one crash also triggered a crisis of confidence, reigniting deeper anxieties for many about INEC’s technological competence ahead of the 2027 general elections. One user bluntly captured the collective skepticism by asking if their votes were actually going to count.

Finally, the breakdown has caused widespread deadline panic as many pointed out the unfairness of the compressed timeline. With the portal down, voters are now left with the stressful choice of either waiting for INEC to fix the servers or braving the crowds at physical INEC offices.

A heavy blow to INEC’s digital credibility

The timing of this digital failure could not be worse for the commission. INEC Chairman Professor Joash Amupitan recently announced an ambitious downloadable PVC system, which is scheduled to be piloted during the Osun governorship election on August 15.

On X, critics are already pointing out the irony: if a basic registration portal cannot handle Day 1 traffic, how will INEC manage digital permanent voter cards in a crucial election?

At the time of publication, INEC has maintained radio silence on X regarding the outage, offering no timeline for a fix.

For now, the consensus on social media is clear: Nigerians want to vote, but they need a system that actually works. Until the portal is restored, citizens are being advised to bypass the website entirely and visit INEC’s State or LGA offices in person to secure their registration.
