Tech giant, Google has announced the launch of its Gemini Student Offer in Nigeria, providing university, polytechnic, and college of education students with 12 months of free access to Google AI Plus, a subscription valued at ₦92,400 per student.

The initiative, open to enrolled students aged 18 and older across accredited higher institutions in Nigeria, aims to enhance academic learning and equip students with advanced digital skills. Returning students who claimed the offer in the previous academic session can also renew their subscription for an additional 12 months upon re-verifying their student status.

Through the offer, eligible students unlock higher usage limits, access to the multi-modal Gemini Omni model, Gemini Live for real-time voice interaction, Deep Research tools for academic projects, automated practice quizzes, unlimited file uploads, and 400 GB of cloud storage. Nigeria joins 26 other Sub-Saharan African countries where the educational offer is currently active.

“AI is the defining technological shift of our generation, and for Nigeria, with one of the youngest and most entrepreneurial populations in the world, it is an immediate leapfrog opportunity. By offering 12 months of free Google AI Plus for the second consecutive year, we are removing financial barriers so that Nigerian students can master complex subjects, build in-demand digital skills, and compete confidently in the global economy,” said Olumide Balogun, Director, West & East Africa at Google.

Addressing ongoing concerns regarding academic integrity and AI misuse in higher education, Google highlighted that the platform features a guided learning mode designed to act as an interactive tutor providing hints, step-by-step guidance, and probing questions rather than generating immediate answers.

A Google DeepMind study involving 1,763 students across West African institutions demonstrated that students using guided learning achieved 1.2 to 1.7 years of academic progress within eight weeks. The study revealed that over 90% of student engagements centered on conceptual understanding, with direct solutions provided in only 2% of interactions.

    To support institutional oversight:

    • Educators using Google Classroom can lock Gemini into Guided Learning mode to enforce academic standards.
    • Student and classroom data are strictly excluded from training Google’s AI models.
    • With 74% of teenagers relying on video content for academic work, YouTube has integrated study guardrails, including “Take a Break” reminders, bedtime alerts, and restricted YouTube Shorts feeds during study periods.

The 12-month Google AI Plus package equips students with specialized academic utilities, including Gemini Study Notebooks to convert lecture materials into custom study plans, Google Lens Homework Helper to solve math equations and diagrams via photo capture, and interactive 3D visualizations.
