Nigerian Communications Satellite Limited (NIGCOMSAT) has announced that its upcoming NigComSat-2A and NigComSat-2B satellites will significantly strengthen Nigeria’s security framework by enhancing criminal tracking and securing military communications in remote regions.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily program on Monday, NIGCOMSAT Managing Director and CEO Jane Nkechi Egerton-Idehen explained that the new space assets are designed to provide technical support to defense agencies, particularly in areas lacking ground communication infrastructure.
The new satellites will support spatial tracking, digital mapping, and real-time surveillance to monitor criminal activities in difficult-to-reach terrains. Additionally, these assets will offer dedicated, secure channels to connect frontline troops in remote operational zones, such as the Sambisa Forest, directly to command-and-control centers. Ultimately, this dedicated network aims to replace unencrypted or vulnerable communication lines, mitigating the risk of operational intelligence being compromised.
According to Egerton-Idehen, addressing signal blackout and secure communication gaps in defense operations remains critical to improving tactical efficiency across Nigeria’s security architecture. The deployment of NigComSat-2A and 2B forms part of broader federal efforts to leverage satellite technology for national security and digital intelligence.
