Everyday Nigerians can now subscribe for shares in the Dangote Petroleum Refinery through Moniepoint POS terminals and mobile apps, bringing one of Nigeria’s biggest capital-market opportunities closer to ordinary investors.

For millions of Nigerians who have traditionally viewed the stock market as something reserved for wealthy investors and financial professionals, the Dangote Petroleum Refinery Initial Public Offering (IPO) is becoming more accessible.

Moniepoint Microfinance Bank and financial technology infrastructure company TeamApt Ltd. have partnered to enable Nigerians to subscribe for shares in the IPO through Moniepoint’s nationwide network of Point-of-Sale (POS) terminals and digital banking platforms.

The offering allows Nigerians to buy shares in the 650,000-barrel-per-day Dangote Petroleum Refinery at ₦525 per share, with a minimum subscription of 10 shares and a maximum of 500 shares per transaction.

At the minimum subscription level, an investor can participate with ₦5,250, potentially opening the door for first-time investors, small business owners, market traders, artisans, salaried workers and other Nigerians who may previously have found participation in major public offerings difficult.

The partnership addresses one of the biggest barriers to retail investment: access.

Rather than requiring potential investors to navigate traditional investment channels, Nigerians can subscribe through Moniepoint agents and POS terminals in their communities. Customers using the Moniepoint Personal and Business Banking apps can also complete their subscriptions digitally.

Moniepoint says its POS network reaches all 774 local government areas in Nigeria, giving the IPO a physical distribution channel that extends beyond major commercial centres.

For an ordinary Nigerian, this means the opportunity to invest can be accessed through financial channels already used for everyday activities such as transfers, payments and withdrawals.

The wider significance is that people do not necessarily have to travel to a bank branch or investment office to explore participation in the offer.

Beyond the Dangote Refinery IPO itself, the partnership could help expose more Nigerians to the concept of investing and owning shares in businesses operating in the economy.

For many low- and middle-income Nigerians, income from daily work remains their primary means of building financial security. Greater access to formal investment products provides another potential avenue for building assets over time, although returns on shares are not guaranteed and investors can also lose money.

Babatunde Olofin, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Moniepoint Microfinance Bank, said the initiative reflects the company’s view that financial inclusion should extend beyond basic transactions.

“Financial happiness is about more than the ability to transact. It is also about having access to opportunities to grow and build wealth,” Olofin said.

He added that making the refinery IPO available through Moniepoint’s POS network would help reach “market traders, artisans, and first-time investors wherever they are.”

TeamApt provides the technology infrastructure supporting the initiative, helping transactions move through the payment systems required to process retail participation at scale.

Dennis Ajalie, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of TeamApt, said the initiative demonstrates how payment infrastructure can connect everyday consumers with opportunities traditionally associated with the formal financial sector.

According to him, the technology makes it possible for a major capital-markets opportunity to reach millions of people through channels already embedded in their daily lives.

The collaboration also creates a potential model for how future investment opportunities could be distributed to a wider population through digital platforms and agent networks.

For the average Nigerian, the immediate benefit is convenience and proximity. Someone in a local market, small business or community where a Moniepoint agent operates can potentially access the IPO without having to visit a conventional investment office.

It also lowers the practical barrier to becoming a retail investor, particularly for people making their first entry into the capital market.

However, accessibility does not remove investment risk. Nigerians considering the offer still need to understand the terms of the IPO, the risks associated with owning shares, and the fact that the value of an investment can rise or fall.

The partnership nevertheless represents a broader shift in how Nigerians can access the capital market: moving investment opportunities from institutions and specialised financial channels closer to the everyday consumer.

For ordinary Nigerians, the significance may ultimately extend beyond the Dangote Refinery IPO itself. If similar digital and agent-based channels are applied to future offerings, more people could gain the ability to participate directly in the ownership of businesses and potentially build financial assets over time.
