A new report from Salient Advisory highlights the growing impact of 24 African health supply chain innovators. These startups, now reaching over 50,000 healthcare providers across 33 countries, are transforming how healthcare products are accessed and distributed across the continent.
Funded by the Gates Foundation, the report, Leading Innovations Enabling Health Product Access in Africa, identifies a cohort of healthtech companies that have weathered economic challenges to become industry leaders. With an average of 10 years in operation, these innovators have partnered with over 100 manufacturers and 75 public health institutions, delivering essential medicines to millions of people.
Kasha, a leading online pharmacy, exemplifies the success of these startups. With annual revenues surpassing $50 million in 2023, Kasha is one of several companies demonstrating the significant commercial potential of the African health-tech market.
The report categorizes these innovators into four key areas:
- Order and Inventory Management: Representing 13 of the 24 featured companies, these startups are optimizing supply chains for hospitals, clinics, and pharmacies.
- Online Pharmacies: Four leading online pharmacies are reaching nearly 10 million customers.
- Product Protection and Visibility: These companies focus on ensuring the quality and authenticity of medical products.
- Medical Drone Delivery and Data Analytics: These innovators are exploring cutting-edge solutions for last-mile delivery and data-driven insights.
Despite their achievements, the report emphasizes the need for continued support from governments, donors, and industry partners. By simplifying regulations, investing in evidence-based partnerships, and evolving payment systems, stakeholders can help these innovators scale their impact and reach underserved populations.
