The Consumer Advocacy and Empowerment Foundation (CADEF), a leading Nigerian non-profit focused on consumer rights and advocacy, will host a high-level Distributed Energy Resources (DER) Stakeholders’ Workshop on Thursday, April 24, 2025, at The Providence Hotel, Ikeja GRA, Lagos. Themed “Overcoming Barriers to a Sustainable Energy Transition,” the workshop will foster critical dialogue and collaboration among policymakers, energy experts, investors, development partners, and clean energy advocates.
This timely workshop supports Nigeria’s energy goals, including the Federal Government’s 2015 National Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Policy (NREEEP) and National Determined Contribution (NDC), which aim to increase on-grid renewable energy from 1.3% in 2015 to 30% by 2030. As Nigeria pursues its Vision 30:30:30 to achieve 30,000MW of electricity by 2030, with 30% from renewables, CADEF and other sector experts will leverage this workshop to present practical and scalable DER solutions. Sessions will address crucial areas such as access to solar financing and investment opportunities, DER integration strategies and grid resilience, policy and regulatory developments, and emerging technologies and case studies.
Prof. Chiso Ndukwe-Okafor, Executive Director of CADEF, emphasized the workshop’s action-oriented approach: “This workshop is not just about dialogue; it’s about driving action. Distributed energy resources are key to unlocking sustainable and inclusive energy access, particularly for underserved communities. Through this engagement, we aim to foster cross-sector collaboration and equip stakeholders with the necessary tools and insights to scale effective solutions.”
Participants will gain valuable insights from clean energy pioneers and contribute to shaping policy and investment discussions on Nigeria’s energy transition. Given the rapidly increasing demand for reliable electricity, DER technologies like solar mini-grids, battery storage, and hybrid systems are becoming increasingly crucial for Nigeria’s energy mix.
Lovelyn Okafor, CADEF’s Director of Programmes, highlighted the workshop’s significance: “The time is ripe to leverage distributed energy innovations to build a resilient and inclusive energy future. We are bringing together key voices, from grassroots innovators to top-tier investors and government officials, to spark lasting transformation.”
CADEF has been at the forefront of driving change in the renewable energy sector through innovative initiatives. These include the 2024 launch of the Distributed Energy Resources (DER) one-stop shop at der.cadefng.org, a digital platform designed to revolutionize how stakeholders and businesses within the DER ecosystem perceive, access, and manage energy solutions. CADEF also recently announced the GreenLabs Programme in collaboration with Jacob’s Ladder Africa, an initiative aimed at inspiring, equipping, and empowering young Nigerians to develop sustainable, climate-smart solutions for critical environmental and socio-economic challenges.
Workshop sessions will feature a live demonstration of the newly launched DER platform, “Renew Energy Naija,” at DER.CADEFNG.ORG, along with panel discussions on financing and incentives, public-private partnerships, and international collaborations. CADEF believes that by strengthening multi-stakeholder collaboration, Nigeria can fully realize the potential of decentralized renewable energy, significantly boost energy access, and empower millions of underserved households and businesses.
