The Internet of Things (IoT) is poised to become a trillion-dollar industry in 2025, fueled by advancements in artificial intelligence (AI), 5G, and the global push for sustainability. This transformative technology connects everything from homes to factories, unlocking real-time data and efficiency gains across industries.

According to data from AltIndex.com, the IoT market has doubled in size since 2018, driven by surging demand for connected solutions. This growth positions IoT for a landmark year in 2025.

As a cornerstone technology of Industry 4.0, IoT integrates seamlessly into various markets, fostering connections between people, processes, and devices. This integration spans sectors beyond manufacturing, including automation, big data, and robotics. Despite challenges presented by the global semiconductor shortage, the demand for IoT solutions continues to rise.

A Statista Market Insights survey projects a fifth consecutive year of double-digit growth for the IoT segment in 2025. Since 2021, the market has grown at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 12%, translating to a roughly $100 billion annual increase in revenue. This impressive growth propels IoT into the trillion-dollar industry category.

Statista data forecasts a significant jump in global IoT revenue this year, reaching $1.05 trillion – the highest ever recorded. Industrial and consumer IoT segments are expected to be the primary drivers of this growth, with projected increases of 15% and 13% respectively, reaching $275 billion and $235 billion in revenue. The automotive IoT sector, currently the second-largest, is anticipated to grow by 9% to $274 billion.

Looking ahead, Statista predicts continued growth in global IoT revenue, exceeding $1.5 trillion by the end of the decade, with an annual increase of approximately $120 billion.

At its core, IoT establishes a self-reporting network of connected devices that communicate with each other and users in real-time. This groundbreaking technology has revolutionized automation, monitoring, control, and data analysis, solidifying its position as a critical component of Industry 4.0. These advancements have fueled an explosion in IoT connections across all sectors.

Since 2021, the number of IoT connections has more than doubled, surging from 9.2 billion to a projected 23.1 billion in 2025. Statista forecasts this number to climb by over 70% by the end of the decade, reaching nearly 40 billion connections.
