How can blue light harm our vision?
Blue light strikes hardest at one of the most valuable times of our day – bedtime. It can inhibit melatonin production, which affects the quantity and quality of sleep especially when it’s dark. And it’s not just dry eyes and eye strain we need to worry about, because long exposure to screens can also contribute to more serious issues such as temporary myopia.
Since children’s eyes are more sensitive to blue light, blue light presents a risk at a very early age. These days, kids are spending so much time behind a computer, laptop, smartphone or tablet playing games, taking classes on Zoom or binge-watching TV shows on streaming sites, which means a higher possibility of them experiencing eye health deterioration much earlier in life than their parents.

“From the customer journey standpoint, the television is evolving into a communication device that connects people and machines. Gaming TVs, for example, feature functions that are geared for new consoles such as the PS5 and X-Box series. For home training, there are TVs that rotate into Portrait Mode. In addition, portable TVs are becoming increasingly popular. However, we believe this is insufficient,” he continued. “We anticipate that consumers can now choose OLED TVs with more confidence,” Seok added.
LG Display and LG Electronics have both pushed OLED as being more eye-friendly than LCD over the years. TÜV Rheinland and other independent testing agencies have backed up the claims with ‘Eye Comfort’ and other certifications.
According to TÜV Rheinland, OLED televisions, “met every testing criteria, including in the high color range and High Dynamic Range categories. The company scored 0.87% in the light reflection category, which is half of that of LCD panels”.
TÜV Rheinland awarded LG Display the “Eye Comfort Display (OLED) – Low Blue Light, Flicker-Free” certification in 2019 for its OLED TV screens, as well as the “Flicker-Free Display (OLED)” Verified Mark from top worldwide safety science organization UL. And the fact that this was the first time a TV display has gotten such acclaim for being flicker-free from respected groups makes this an industry first.
Last year, UL verified all of LG Display’s OLED TV panels with its difficult-to-achieve ‘Discomfort Glare Free’ marketing promise — a first in the display industry.
