Medallion Communications Limited, owner of Nigeria’s largest and most connected data center has advocated that apart from Lagos and Abuja, there is a need to have two data centers in each state across Nigeria, arguing that this will enable the end customers to have the best experience of internet and Internet-based applications.

The Chief Executive Officer of Medallion, Engr. Ikechukwu Nnamani, who made this advocacy at the Eko-Konnect Users Conference 2020, held in Lagos this week, noted that apart from helping end users have the best of Internet experience, building data center across Nigeria will also help local hosting and local cloud service delivery.

“Due to transmission challenges with Intercity connectivity and last-mile delivery challenges in Nigeria, unless we have Data centers in Each of the States / critical regional states, attaining a 100 percent penetration may be difficult, but a phase-wise approach will help to move to the next level,” he said.

Ikechukwu, who was represented by Dr. Krish Ranganath, Medallion’s Chief Technology Officer added that a potential of a minimum of 74 Data Centers will enable the dream of Cloud in Nigeria with the edge networks in place of the cloud providers and OTT players.

Though, the Nigerian market is still developing,  Engr. Ikechukwu stated that the Nigerian Industrial IoT industry, which is fairly new is predicted to be a $1 billion industry in five years with a global market currently estimated at $1 Trillion.

Asked what Medallion as one of the biggest players in the industry is doing in this regards,  the Medallion CTO disclosed Medallion as the most connected data center in Nigeria is building additional Data centers in Port- Harcourt, Enugu, Asaba, Kano and Ibadan in phases to be completed in less than 18 months other than the ongoing expansion in Lagos and Abuja. The Asaba data center will be operational by the end of the first quarter of 2020.

Touted Nigeria’s Telehouse, Medallion operates the most prominent, efficient, and cost-effective data center, providing connectivity services to about 90 service providers, including the Nigerian Internet Exchange, the Nigeria .ng domain servers, all international submarine fibers, all long-distance service providers in Nigeria, all GSM, CDMA, Fixed Line, and Fixed Wireless service providers, Value Added Service Providers and Premium Rated Service Providers like Google, Facebook, Orange, Sparkle amongst others
