The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has signaled a new era of digital cooperation, reaffirming Nigeria’s commitment to a strategic partnership with the United States. The collaboration aims to fortify the nation’s digital infrastructure, with a heavy emphasis on Artificial Intelligence (AI), cybersecurity, and large-scale capacity building.

During the Nigeria Data Privacy Capacity Building Workshop, a joint initiative by the U.S. Department of State and the Nigerian Mission, NITDA Director General Kashifu Inuwa highlighted that these efforts are essential for Nigeria to thrive in the global digital economy.

The Director General emphasized that the core of this partnership is the creation of a secure, trusted, and resilient digital ecosystem. He argued that digital transformation cannot succeed without a foundation of trust, noting that high-functioning AI models depend on vast datasets, citizens and businesses must feel their information is protected and robust cybersecurity is the only way to guarantee privacy.

“Trust is the ultimate accelerator. Its absence slows innovation and raises costs, while its presence removes barriers to growth,” Inuwa stated.

The partnership is now shifting toward practical execution by building on the momentum of the 2024 U.S.–Nigeria Binational Commission and a previous joint AI Conference. One key focus area is policy development, which involves creating frameworks that encourage AI adoption while ensuring ethical and responsible deployment. Another priority is workforce training, where Nigeria will leverage U.S. expertise to build local capacity and ensure its young, digital-native population is equipped for the AI revolution. Additionally, the partnership focuses on tech transfer to bridge the gap between U.S.-based technology and Nigerian homegrown solutions to foster digital self-determination.

Inuwa also announced plans to elevate Nigeria’s National Cybersecurity Conference into an international platform. This expansion will allow U.S. cybersecurity firms to showcase cutting-edge technologies and form joint ventures with Nigerian companies developing localized solutions.

With one of the world’s youngest populations, Nigeria is positioning itself as the next major frontier for the digital economy. NITDA remains committed to ensuring that Nigeria does not just consume global technology but becomes a key player in creating it.

“Digital technology is no longer optional,” Inuwa concluded. “It is the future of economic growth. By safeguarding privacy and building a strong digital foundation, we are ensuring Nigeria isn’t just a participant in the AI revolution, but a leader.”
