The Nigerian government has announced a significant investment of $2 billion to expand its existing fiber optic network from 35,000 kilometers to a massive 125,000 kilometers. The ambitious project, backed by the USTDA, European Union, and other partners, aims to boost economic growth and empower Nigerians to participate more fully in the global digital economy.
Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. ‘Bosun Tijani, unveiled the plans at the G20 Digital Economy Group (DEWG) meeting in Maceio, Brazil. He emphasized the critical role of universal and equitable access to connectivity in driving economic development, social inclusion and access to essential services.
“By investing in connectivity and digital skills, Nigeria aims to create new opportunities for our people and drive economic growth. We are inspired by examples from other countries where digital platforms have empowered farmers and businesses,” Minister Tijani said.
Beyond infrastructure, the government is also prioritizing digital literacy and data privacy. Nigeria is investing in large-scale technical talent acceleration programs and establishing a National Data Protection Commission to safeguard personal information and promote data security.
Minister Tijani stressed the importance of data privacy, sovereignty, and cybersecurity in the digital age. “By protecting individuals’ rights and preventing the misuse of sensitive information, we can build trust and stability in our increasingly connected world,” he stated.
Nigeria’s commitment to digital transformation aligns with the broader goals of the G20 DEWG, which aims to promote inclusive and sustainable digital development. By investing in infrastructure, skills, and data protection, Nigeria is positioning itself as a leader in the digital economy.
