…. Funding, talent, and regulation hinder Nigeria’s tech scene

    By Martin Ekpeke

The Nigerian startup ecosystem, despite its recent surge, faces significant challenges that threaten its growth. A new report by TLP Advisory, a leading venture law firm, has identified three primary hurdles: funding, talent, and regulatory bottlenecks.

    Key Findings from the Report:

    • Funding Woes: While 2021 witnessed record-breaking venture capital investments, 51% of surveyed startups still struggle to secure funding. Currency volatility and limited investor access exacerbate the issue. Angel investors have emerged as a crucial lifeline during these challenging times.
    • Talent Crunch: Acquiring and retaining top talent remains a major challenge for startups. Efficient operations and customer-centric strategies are essential to address this issue.
    • Regulatory Hurdles: A complex regulatory landscape poses significant barriers for 30% of founders. Closer collaboration with policymakers, particularly under the Nigeria Startup Act, is crucial to streamline regulations and foster innovation.

    Recommendations for a Thriving Ecosystem

To overcome these challenges and propel the Nigerian startup ecosystem forward, the report recommends the following:

    1. Strategic Partnerships: Fostering stronger collaborations between startups and corporations can unlock new markets and simplify regulatory compliance.
    2. Talent Development: Investing in talent development programs is essential to bridge skill gaps and retain top talent.
    3. Policy Engagement: Proactive participation in policy discussions is crucial to shape a supportive business environment.

    Industry Voices

Odunoluwa Longe, co-founder of TLP Advisory, expressed optimism about the future of the Nigerian tech ecosystem, emphasizing the importance of collaboration and adaptability. Adenike Adeyemi, Executive Director of FATE Foundation, highlighted the unstable regulatory environment as a major challenge. Kola Aina of Ventures Platform stressed the need for proactive policy engagement to shape the industry’s future.

As Nigeria continues to strive for technological advancement, addressing these critical challenges will be vital to unlocking the full potential of its startup ecosystem.
