Great news for Nigeria’s booming tech sector! The country is gearing up to host GITEX, the world’s largest technology event, for the first time in 2025. This exciting development marks a major step towards solidifying Nigeria’s position as a global tech powerhouse.
The agreement was finalized through a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed by the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) and the organizers of GITEX. According to NITDA’s Director General, Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi, hosting GITEX will bring the very best of the tech conference experience straight to Nigeria.
This strategic move aligns perfectly with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s economic reform agenda. Recognizing the importance of global engagement in today’s interconnected world, President Tinubu emphasizes trade diversification as a key driver of sustained economic growth. He has tasked MDAs, including NITDA, with supporting initiatives that foster innovation, create a tech-friendly environment, and develop new industries – all crucial aspects of economic diversification.
“By hosting GITEX Nigeria,” Inuwa explained, “we’re creating a platform for our tech scene to showcase its brilliance. This event will demonstrate to the world that Nigeria is not just open for business, but also a thriving hub of creativity and innovation.”
Trixie LohMirmand, CEO of GITEX’s organizer, echoed Inuwa’s enthusiasm. She acknowledged the impressive track record of Nigerian teams at past GITEX events, highlighting the country’s position as Africa’s fastest-growing developer hub.
“We see immense potential in Nigeria’s AI, digital health, and fintech sectors,” LohMirmand stated. “GITEX Nigeria will not only showcase local advancements but also integrate the Nigerian tech scene with the wider GITEX network, providing a launchpad for Nigerian startups to access new markets.”
