The Chief Executive Officer of Medallion Communications Limited, Engr. Ikechukwu Nnamani, has urged Nigerian women and indeed others across the world have been urged to set up eCommerce related businesses.

Nnamani, who made the call in a paper he delivered at the prestigious Oriental Hotel, during Nigeria Women Digital Agenda Forum in Lagos last week, noted that eCommerce related businesses, will offer women more flexibility, autonomy and ultimately, help them to manage home responsibilities alongside paid work.

“Take full advantage of the digital age in creating a new class of service and revenue stream. Social media is more about commerce than entertainment,” he challenged women at the event, organized by the Centre for Cyber Awareness and Development (CECAD).

Represented by Dr. Krishnan Ranganath, Medallion’s Chief Technology Officer, Nnamani in the paper titled ‘Digital World: Challenges And Opportunities for the Female Gender’, noted that women undertake three-quarters of all unpaid care work, producing output of around $10 trillion, or 13 percent of global GDP. Yet, none of which translates into income, let alone economic power.

He argued that with the challenges and stigma associated with certain jobs for women, they should be aggregated into the Information and Communication technology industry, by encouraging taking up technology based businesses.

“Days of “house wife” is gone – your home is your work place. Take up right employment that suits your need, demand the right terms from the beginning…STEM is not gender based – women are as good as men in stem – don’t be afraid to pursue a career in technology,” he added.

Speaking further, he encouraged women to take short duration certification courses, instead of full degree programs when early stage education was missed before marriage and childbearing.

He believes that women’s economic empowerment is good not just for the women who benefit. Quoting the McKinsey Global Institute, he estimated that advancing gender equality could add $12 trillion per year to the world economy by 2025.

Medallion Communications Limited is one of Nigeria’s ICT champions promoting digital economy with its unique Data Center model, rated as the most connected facility in the country. It combines best global standard at affordable prices.
