The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has adduced reasons it initiated and implemented the infrastructure sharing policy, saying the policy would facilitate quick deployment of telecom services in an efficient manner by the new entrants to the telecom industry.

Posting on its official Facebook Page, the country’s telecom regulator added that it is committed to lead the process of ensuring that the strategic initiatives of the Commission are driven by the strategic management plan through effective oversight, constant reviews and implementation.

“After wide consultation with industry stakeholders, we decided to initiate and implement the infrastructure policy, with the conviction that it would largely accelerate the deployment of services, especially by new entrants,” the NCC said.

The commission also noted that the National Broadband Plan, which has been implemented to 21 percent is expected to unleash pervasive investments in fibre infrastructure and last mile access with active collaboration of the private sector. The NCC said it expects to achieve this by creating regulations that would lower the cost of infrastructure development.
