The final year students of the Department of Electrical and Information Engineering, Covenant University, Ota, last week paid a knowledge-seeking visit to CWG Plc, Nigeria’s largest system integration company.
According to Engr. (Mrs) Abayomi-Alli Olusola, who led the students on the visit, is to give them a peek into what is obtainable in the IT sector and how they can compare notes with what is being taught in the University.
Olusola, further explained that having heard and read so much about CWG Plc, the University management decided to have the students embark on the visit with the intention of exposing them to the reality of what the students are currently taught in school.
“The essence of the visit is to introduce our students to what is happening in the outside world. We are here with the Electrical and Information Engineering students to see what CWG is doing and how we can learn from their expertise and integrate it with what we have learned all these years,” she told ITPulse on the sideline.
She also disclosed that the students, numbering about 80 will be graduating in the next two months, and are curious and expectant about the workplace. Having toured the CWG’s premises, Abayomi said the students are impressed.
“We are so impressed. This is like an eye opener for us. We have gotten more than what we were expecting, as I wasn’t thinking it was going to be this big,” she added, stating that she is taking a message home that Covenant University should have a collaboration with CWG Plc.
The collaboration, she explained will be in the area of capacity building. “We are also looking at some collaboration between CWG Plc and lecturers of the University because they mentioned having an academy. We want a situation where we put our teaching experiences into practical use. That would really be an added advantage for us,” a visibly excited Abayomi added.
Meanwhile, the acting Chief Executive Officer of CWG Plc, Mr. Adewale Adewipo has said the visit of the students is a function of CWG’s vision of making Nigerian youths explore Information and Communications Technology.
“We are happy to receive the students and their lecturer. It is our vision to develop capacity among Nigerian youths so they can compete favourably among their global peers in this knowledge-based economy,” he emphasized.
Adewipo revealed that part of the many ways CWG Plc is helping Nigerian youths to explore technology is through its academy located in Lagos, which train and inspire graduates to develop, deploy, manage and support technology solutions in Information and Communications Technology.
According to him, the Academy, which deals with four core areas of the Information and Communications Technology has resourcefully trained and develop over 1,800 Professionals since inception almost a decade ago, equipping them to compete favourably among their global peers. The Academy offers practical learning experience from experts, who inspire graduates to develop and deploy ICT solutions.
