The Nigerian communications landscape is constantly evolving, and the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) is committed to keeping pace. As part of this commitment, the NCC recently held a public inquiry on three vital regulatory instruments that play a crucial role in shaping the sector.
The public inquiry provided a platform for stakeholders to have their voices heard and contribute to shaping the future of the communications sector.
Speaking at the public inquiry held at the corporate headquarters of NCC in Abuja yesterday, the Executive Vice Chairman of the commission, Dr. Aminu Maida explained that the public inquiry underscores the Commission’s dedication to regulatory excellence. Regularly reviewing and refining these instruments is essential to address emerging challenges, trends, and opportunities in the ever-evolving digital age
“The updated regulations will ensure the communications sector meets the demands of this digital age while fostering competition, protecting consumers, and aligning with international standards,” he said.
The three instruments in focus:
- Telecommunications Networks Interconnect Regulations: Interconnection allows seamless communication between networks and drives industry growth. This review is vital to keep pace with technology, foster competition, protect consumers, align with international standards, and improve regulatory efficiency.
- Guidelines on Procedure for Granting Approval to Disconnect Telecommunications Operators: As the industry evolves, there may be instances where disconnecting operators becomes necessary. These guidelines establish a transparent and accountable framework for such approvals.
- Guidelines for Dispute Resolution: Disputes are inevitable. Having a robust framework for resolving them is crucial. These guidelines provide a clear and transparent mechanism for addressing conflicts within the communications sector, promoting timely resolutions and ensuring fair treatment for all stakeholders.
Meanwhile, the Ag. Head Legal & Regulatory Services of The Nigerian Communications Commission, Mrs. Chizua Whyte during her welcome address at the public inquiry stated that the Public Inquiry is a vital part of the Nigerian Communications Commission’s (NCC) mandate to create a dynamic communications sector.
She stressed that the Nigerian Communications Act 2003 empowers the Commission to develop and amend regulatory instruments, and the input of the stakeholders is crucial in refining these regulations to address the sector’s evolving challenges.
“As the communications industry evolves with emerging technologies, our regulatory instruments must adapt swiftly. The Commission’s collaborative efforts with stakeholders have driven significant advancements and will continue to propel the sector forward,” she added.
The Public Inquiry underscores NCC’s commitment to regulatory excellence and to building a robust communications sector that supports the Nigerian economy.
