The directive issued to telecommunications operators compelling them to streamline their tariff structures, bundles, and promotional offers by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) comes with four key provisions.

    They are:

    • A clear and concise presentation of tariff information to subscribers.
    • Mandatory disclosure of tariff plans via USSD.
    • The elimination of access fees and asymmetric fee structures.
    • The offering of standalone data bundles without unnecessary add-ons.

The directive was contained in a statement signed by Reuben Mouka, Director of Public Affairs at the NCC.

The aim of the directive issued on July 29, 2024, is to enhance transparency and empower subscribers with clearer information about voice, SMS, and data costs.

It mandates Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) to provide a comprehensive breakdown of their tariff plans. This includes detailed information on add-ons, pricing, opt-in/out procedures, renewal terms, and rollover policies.

The NCC emphasizes the need to reduce tariff complexity, ensure fair promotional practices, and protect consumer interests. The guidelines also promote fair competition by standardizing tariff structures.

MNOs have until December 31, 2024, to fully implement the simplified tariff plans. The NCC has stressed the importance of maintaining quality of service standards while adhering to the new guidelines.
