The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has announced that the final deadline for all SIM cards to be linked to National Identity Numbers (NINs) is September 14, 2024. As of today, over 96% of SIMs have been successfully linked, reflecting significant progress in the Federal Government’s policy.
In a statement signed by Reuben Mouka, Director of Public Affairs, the telecom regulator urges all Nigerians who have not yet completed the linkage process to do so promptly, warning that failure to comply by the deadline will result in SIM deactivation.
To ensure the integrity of the mobile network and prevent fraud, the NCC has also uncovered instances of individuals possessing an unusually high number of SIM cards. The Commission is working with security agencies to address this issue and crack down on the sale of pre-registered SIMs.
For those who have faced difficulties with the linkage process, the NCC has provided self-service portals and encourages individuals to visit their service providers for assistance.
The Commission reminds the public that the sale and purchase of pre-registered SIMs are illegal and punishable by law. Citizens are therefore urged to report any such activities to the NCC.
