A new report by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) reveals that countries worldwide are making strides in cybersecurity, but significant challenges remain to address evolving threats.
The Global Cybersecurity Index 2024 (GCI 2024) assesses national efforts across five pillars: legal, technical, organizational, capacity development, and cooperation. The report ranks countries based on their commitment to these pillars and their impact.
While many countries have made progress, particularly in legal measures and incident response capabilities, the report highlights a “cyber capacity gap” in many regions, characterized by skills, staffing, equipment, and funding limitations.
Key findings from the GCI 2024 include:
- Increased Legal Measures: 177 countries have at least one regulation on personal data protection, privacy protection, or breach notification.
- Active CIRTs: 139 countries have operational Computer Incident Response Teams.
- National Cybersecurity Strategies: 132 countries have developed national cybersecurity strategies.
- Cyber Awareness Campaigns: 152 countries have conducted cyber awareness initiatives.
- Industry Incentives: 127 countries offer incentives to promote the cybersecurity industry.
- International Cooperation: 92% of countries participate in international cybersecurity treaties or cooperation mechanisms.
Despite these advancements, the report emphasizes the need for continued efforts to address emerging threats, strengthen capacity development, and foster international cooperation.
ITU’s Global Cybersecurity Index provides a valuable assessment of global cybersecurity progress and offers recommendations for countries to enhance their efforts. By addressing the identified challenges, countries can work towards creating a more secure and resilient digital future.
