In a significant leap for Nigeria’s digital economy, corps members serving with the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) have unveiled a suite of functional digital solutions designed to overhaul the operations of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).

The presentation took place during the official commissioning of the NITDA Innovation Space at the Agency’s headquarters in Abuja, with the event highlighting a strategic shift in the NYSC programme, moving from a year of routine service to a high-impact innovation pipeline.

Among the flagship projects demonstrated were the NITDA Smart ID Management system, developed by Team Sentinel and Trivergent and the NYSC Corps360 (COPA App) by Team COPA.

Ruth Mmachi Owana-Jack, an innovator and ex-NITDA corps member, described the Smart ID System as a secure and unified digital identity solution. The system addresses identity immobility; the frustration of carrying multiple, non-updatable physical cards.

“Our solution is a seamless system that combines a mobile app, a web application, and a unified card supporting NFC for instant digital sharing. It allows for one card for all purposes: secure identification, real-time updates, and seamless interaction,” Owana-Jack explained.

Lukman M. Abdullahi, another ex-corps member involved in the project, noted that the current reliance on multiple physical cards for access and networking is inefficient, costly, and product-wasteful, stressing that the new solution integrates these functions into a single digital-first platform.

Meanwhile, the Director-General of NITDA, Mallam Kashifu Inuwa, had earleir emphasized that the initiative is a response to a labour market where 3.5 to 4 million youth enter annually.

“Our goal is simple: before you leave here, you should either have built a business or created something valuable enough to earn you a place in the ecosystem,” Inuwa stated.

He highlighted that NITDA absorbs roughly 700 corps members annually, a figure that nearly doubles its permanent staff, and treats them as a primary engine for innovation through the “Idea to Impact” programme.

The Director-General of the NYSC, Brigadier General Olakunle Oluseye Nafiu, hailed the collaboration as a model for national development. He announced that starting with the 2026 Batch A Stream One, the NYSC has fully digitized its ID card system, allowing members to access identification via digital dashboards.

General Nafiu expressed a strong interest in adopting the Place of Primary Assignment (PPA) verification and management solution developed by the NITDA corps members for nationwide use.

“The youths we deploy are not just serving; they are solution providers. What is happening here at NITDA is exactly what the country needs,” Nafiu said.

The innovators plan to deploy these solutions in phases, starting within NITDA before expanding to other government MDAs and eventually the private sector.

    Key Innovations Unveiled:

    • Smart ID Management: A unified NFC-enabled card and app for real-time identity updates.
    • NYSC Corps360 (COPA App): A centralized platform for service coordination and operational efficiency.
    • PPA Verification Tool: A digital solution for managing and verifying corps members at their duty posts.
