The Internet Exchange Point of Nigeria (IXPN) has stated that the directive by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) for banks and other financial institutions to bring their data to Nigeria on or before January 1, 2027, is a significant step toward strengthening Nigeria’s digital sovereignty, security, and economic growth.

The Chief Executive Officer of IXPN, Mr. Muhammed Rudman, while reacting to the circular by the apex bank, believes that by requiring financial institutions to store and process critical data within Nigeria, the directive ensures that sensitive information remains under local jurisdiction, enhancing regulatory oversight, improving data protection, and reducing exposure to external risks.

According to Mr. Rudman, compliance for financial institutions extends beyond merely meeting regulatory requirements; it actively unlocks massive opportunities to deliver faster, more reliable digital services.

“Keeping data and internet traffic within the country significantly reduces latency, accelerates application performance, and ultimately enhances the end-user customer experience. Additionally, localizing this traffic minimizes dependence on international routes, leading to greater network resilience and operational efficiency during global fiber cuts or external disruptions,” he explained.

He argued that this regulatory shift is also expected to trigger a multiplier effect across the broader technology ecosystem, as it will accelerate capital investments in Nigeria’s digital infrastructure, encouraging the rapid growth and expansion of local data centers, cloud services, internet exchange points, and connectivity providers.

With more critical content, applications, and financial services being hosted locally, businesses and consumers will benefit from a stronger, more secure, and highly cost-effective digital ecosystem.

As of today, IXPN remains Nigeria’s primary routing hub and is strategically positioned to play a key role in enabling this massive infrastructure transformation. Through its carrier-neutral interconnection platform, extensive national reach across multiple states, and a robust ecosystem comprising network operators, cloud providers, content delivery networks (CDNs), and data centers, IXPN is already providing the vital framework that helps organizations localize data and exchange traffic efficiently. This infrastructure ensures that financial institutions can meet the apex bank’s compliance requirements with maximum confidence and minimal friction.

Ultimately, the implementation of this directive promises a multifaceted win for businesses, consumers, and the nation as a whole. By keeping data and traffic local, Nigeria is not only securing its critical financial assets but is also lowering connectivity costs, boosting service performance, and creating a more resilient digital economy. The directive lays down a solid foundation for sustainable growth, ensuring that the country’s data remains a local advantage that drives future innovation and investment.
