Meta, in partnership with the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation & Digital Economy (FMCIDE), has announced the launch of AI Academy Nigeria, a national capacity-building initiative designed to strengthen the country’s artificial intelligence talent pool and digital innovation ecosystem.
The initiative is being executed through the Ministry’s 3 Million Technical Talent (3MTT) programme, the National Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics (NCAIR), and Robotics and Artificial Intelligence Nigeria (RAIN).
AI Academy Nigeria aims to provide Nigerian developers, startups, students, and early-career professionals with practical learning, hands-on technical training, and startup funding—creating direct pathways from foundational AI concepts to market-ready products.
The program is structured across three complementary learning and growth streams: the AI Startup Pitchathon, AI Skills Development Programmes, and a Developer Bootcamp.
The AI Startup Pitchathon focuses on early-stage Nigerian startups leveraging Meta’s AI technologies to solve real-world problems, with applications closing on August 21, 2026. Ten shortlisted startups will pitch live at GITEX Nigeria on September 3, 2026, where two winning teams will each receive $5,000 in cash, $2,000 in Meta ad credits, and an all-expenses-paid trip to represent Nigeria at the AI Summit by Meta in Istanbul, Türkiye on November 23–24, 2026.
The AI Skills Development Programmes are open to the entire 3MTT community across Nigeria through free self-paced online modules and virtual instructor-led sessions on Coursera, DeepLearning.AI, and DataCamp. The curriculum covers key topics including Building Generative AI Apps with Llama, Prompt Engineering with Llama 2 & 3, Introducing Multimodal Llama 3.2, Generative AI in Data Analytics and Social Media Marketing, and an AI 101 curriculum developed by Startupbootcamp for Meta. The top 100 performers in this track will earn full scholarships for paid Meta Blueprint certifications along with up to $5,000 in Meta advertising credits.
Finally, the Developer Bootcamp is an intensive six-week cohort-based program delivered by RAIN for selected developers and startups. During this bootcamp, participants receive technical guidance and direct mentorship from Meta’s network of AI experts to build functional, market-ready AI solutions.
What government, Meta and RAIN have to say
Commenting on the initiative, Dr. ’Bosun Tijani, Minister of Communications, Innovation & Digital Economy, emphasized the strategic importance of public-private partnerships in driving digital economic growth:
“Through this partnership, we are equipping developers, entrepreneurs, and young professionals with practical AI skills while creating pathways for innovation and globally competitive startups. This initiative further reflects our commitment to building a thriving AI ecosystem through strategic public-private collaboration and positioning Nigeria as a leader in Africa’s digital economy.”
Sade Dada, Head of Public Policy for Anglophone West Africa at Meta, highlighted Nigeria’s untapped potential: “Nigeria is home to some of Africa’s most dynamic AI talent. What many founders and developers need is greater access to practical training, funding, and platforms to build impactful solutions. AI Academy Nigeria was built to provide exactly that—equipping more Nigerians with the skills to build with AI, while giving the strongest ideas a route from home to a regional stage.”
Dr. Olushola Ayoola, Founder and CEO of RAIN, added: “Building Nigeria’s AI capacity requires the kind of coordinated effort we are seeing here. RAIN is proud to partner with Meta, FMCIDE, and 3MTT to deliver a programme that reflects the scale of what is possible when the right partners align around a shared goal.”
