The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Communications Satellite Limited (NIGCOMSAT), Jane Egerton-Idehen, has commended the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation & Digital Economy for launching its nationwide rural connectivity initiative, designed to bridge Nigeria’s digital divide through the deployment of 4,000 new mobile network sites.

The project officially kicked off in Delta State, targeting underserved and hard-to-reach communities to ensure unhindered access to the country’s growing digital economy.

Highlighting the physical and economic complexities of extending telecom infrastructure into remote areas, Egerton-Idehen noted that bringing connectivity to some rural locations requires navigating extreme environments, including building infrastructure directly in swampy terrains.

“Getting equipment, people, and materials into deep rural communities can be a logistical nightmare. And then there is the economics. Many of these communities simply don’t offer the commercial return that would normally justify the cost of building and operating a site,” Egerton-Idehen shared in a LinkedIn post.

However, she emphasized that true digital inclusion requires looking beyond immediate commercial profitability, ensuring that rural dwellers enjoy the same access to educational, financial, and economic opportunities as residents in major urban centers like Lagos and Abuja.

According to her, the rollout of the 4,000 mobile sites represents a crucial step toward human empowerment, opening up critical digital services across several key areas:

    • Empowering youth to access online learning platforms and educational resources.
    • Enabling rural entrepreneurs to expand their business reach beyond local villages.
    • Granting farmers direct access to real-time market prices and weather forecasting data.
    • Facilitating remote access to digital health and telemedicine services.

“Infrastructure may look like steel, cables, towers, and equipment. But ultimately, infrastructure is about people,” Egerton-Idehen stated, reinforcing that structured digital inclusion requires deliberate government interventions and heavy logistical commitment.

The ongoing rural expansion initiative forms part of the Federal Government’s broader strategy to expand broadband coverage, boost digital literacy, and foster inclusive economic growth across all geopolitical zones in Nigeria.
