In a strategic bid to strengthen digital sovereignty, attract foreign direct investment, and retain top tech talent, the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has officially inaugurated a dedicated taskforce to drive the implementation of Nigeria’s Sovereign Cloud Initiative.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony in Abuja, the Director-General of NITDA, Kashifu Inuwa, framed the initiative as an ecosystem-wide reform capable of transforming critical sectors, including finance, healthcare, agriculture, and manufacturing by building a resilient, locally anchored digital public infrastructure.

The sovereign cloud drive focuses heavily on accelerating investment and domestic capacity ahead of key regulatory benchmarks, such as the Central Bank of Nigeria’s (CBN) compliance mandates for financial institutions.

To build market confidence, Inuwa announced that NITDA will host industry workshops and roll out a public directory portal by October. This portal will serve as an accredited directory of certified cloud service providers, infrastructure operators, system integrators, and tech aggregators, giving banks and regulated enterprises a trusted roadmap for local cloud migration.

Financial sector regulators have underscored the critical connection between cloud infrastructure and economic security. Rakiya Yusuf, Director of Payment System Policy at the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), noted that digital stability is fundamental to overall financial stability. She highlighted that reliable, real-time data access is crucial for sound policy formulation and confirmed that the CBN will continue working closely with NITDA to ensure financial institutions transition smoothly to compliant domestic cloud platforms.

Private sector stakeholders have expressed strong optimism about the economic dividends of localized cloud hosting. Ikechukwu Nnamani, Chief Executive Officer of Medallion Data Centres Limited, stated that the policy is already attracting foreign direct investment into Nigeria’s data center, connectivity, and cloud sectors. He emphasized that keeping cloud service payments within Nigeria will stem capital flight, reduce pressure on the naira, lower network latency, and significantly improve digital service delivery.

To operationalize the strategy, NITDA’s Regulation and Compliance Department highlighted that the taskforce marks a shift from policy formulation to nationwide execution. Emmanuel Edet, Acting Director of the department, explained that the platform brings together regulators, public agencies, and private enterprise leaders to build a collaborative digital ecosystem that fuels economic growth across secondary sectors.

As execution begins, the Sovereign Cloud Initiative positions Nigeria to capitalize on its rapidly growing digital economy. By aligning rigorous regulatory compliance with strong incentives for local data centers, NITDA aims to turn local data hosting into a major driver for job creation, foreign capital inflow, and long-term tech innovation across West Africa.
