TheComputer Professionals (Registration Council of Nigeria) (CPN) has said this year’s IT Assembly scheduled to hold on the 26th – 27th of June at the NICON Luxury Hotel, Abuja, will be paperless, as an App that is compatible with all operating systems and media has been designed to contain e-copies of Assembly papers and documents.
CPN disclosed the agenda to the media yesterday in Lagos, saying the 2-day programme with the theme, “Digital Infrastructure: Defining the Next Step,” will, as usual draw participation from the academia, private sector as well as the government.
“As a country, we need to create wealth and sustain the prosperity through digital infrastructure by giving more people the knowledge and skills to compete, collaborate and connect so as to move the country forward,” said Mr. Allwell C. Achumba, Registrar and Secretary to the CPN Council in his speech.
Achumba added that digital knowledge and skills have become the global currency of the 21st century economies. Thus, Information Technology has become the fulcrum of any thriving economy, which must not be ignored by players in such economy.

on the programme for this year’s Assembly shows that an Induction Lecture with the
topic ‘The Significance of Professionalism, IT Ethics & Codes of
Professionals’ will be delivered. Other activities will see Engr. Chidi Nwafor,
Director, IT at INEC speaking on eVoting and its possibilities. The keynote
address, ‘Digital Infrastructure; Defining the next step’ will be delivered by
Mr. Peter Amangbo, Immediate Past managing Director, Zenith Bank Plc.
Meanwhile, CPN has frowned at the activities of unregistered IT practitioners in
Nigeria, noting information technology is a very
critical profession, which does not accept anybody to participate in.
According to Charles Uwadia, CPN President, whoever is not a registered professional, but practicing IT in the country could actually create some damages to the society. “So in recognition of this factor, the law says, before you can practice that profession, you must be registered. So that we can know what you do, and where you are. But we also know that there are people who are not even aware of the law. So we try to reach out to them and enlighten them about the law. In addition, we expose them to some of the benefits that they enjoy as members, such as credibility, networking and collaboration with other registered professionals, as well as opportunities for skills development with regular professional trainings,” he said.
The TheComputer Professionals (Registration Council of Nigeria regulates and controls the practice of information technology practice in Nigeria. It was established through Act No. 49 of 1993 and charged with the regulation, control and supervision of the computing profession and practice in Nigeria in line with Section 1 (2) of the Act under the supervision of the Federal Ministry of Education, with the National Assembly having an oversight functions over it.
