Africa Data Centres, a subsidiary of pan-African technology group Cassava Technologies, has significantly expanded its Cape Town facility, CPT1, by adding 6MW of IT load and 1,000 racks of white space. This expansion, supported by a $300 million loan from the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation (DFC), doubles the data center’s capacity.
Driven by increasing demand for colocation services in South Africa, the expansion includes three new state-of-the-art data halls, each designed with a modular architecture for scalability and efficiency. The facility incorporates advanced cooling technologies, including both air and liquid cooling, while maintaining an impressive Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) rating.
A key highlight is the integration of wheeled solar power, making CPT1 the first data center in Africa to utilize this innovative and sustainable energy solution. This technology, enabled by a partnership with Distributed Power Africa, ensures a reliable and environmentally friendly power supply.
The expanded facility also benefits from its strategic location near submarine cable landing stations and the Cape Town Internet Exchange (CINX), enhancing connectivity and reducing latency for customers.
