The management of Moniepoint, a leading African financial technology company, has called for direct collaboration and knowledge-sharing among fintech builders to drive overall industry improvement.
Speaking at the inaugural Moniepoint “Off the Record Engineering Mixer” in Lagos, the company highlighted that the technical hurdles of operating financial systems at scale are shared across the ecosystem rather than proprietary.
The closed-door gathering brought together senior engineering leaders from prominent fintech platforms, including Flutterwave, Cowrywise, and Nomba. Conversations focused on two core themes: “Building for Scale, The Trade-offs of Distributed Systems in Fintech” and “Building Distributed Systems for POS at Scale.”
Participants discussed key operational realities, including network dependencies, system failures, architectural trade-offs, security, and designing infrastructure for failure.
During the sessions, Moniepoint outlined its engineering framework for building resilient card payment infrastructure designed to protect customers from false debits.
“Building reliable payment infrastructure is about understanding every point at which a transaction can fail, determining what the system knows at each stage, and designing the right response when things go wrong,” explained Ayomide Kolawole, Engineering Manager for Card Payments at Moniepoint.
He said Moniepoint’s responsibility is to ensure that customers are not left carrying the consequences of uncertainty created within a system they rely on. “For us, the goal is not simply to process transactions quickly, but to make sure that when something goes wrong, the customer experience does not become the cost of that failure,” he added.
Moniepoint’s card payments infrastructure currently processes over 20 million transactions daily. The platform utilizes real-time health monitoring of issuing banks and payment processors. If a transaction destination falls below a set performance threshold, the system automatically halts routing to that endpoint preventing transaction backlog and reducing prolonged wait times for users.
The event served as an open forum for engineering practitioners to move beyond standard presentations and analyze the trade-offs tied to architectural models such as sharding, asynchronous processing, and service decomposition. Attendees noted that while these strategies address specific scaling hurdles, they can introduce new operational maintenance considerations if not balanced with strong security and end-to-end observability.
Moniepoint stated that it will continue supporting initiatives that foster transparent technical exchange, reinforcing the principle that long-term industry reliability depends on designing systems that account for uncertainty and protect consumers from operational failure.
