A new survey by Flourish Ventures, in partnership with Endeavor, Launch Africa, Madica, Econa, and Startup Snapshot, has shed light on African tech founders’ demanding yet fulfilling journey. The study, involving over 160 founders across 13 countries, reveals a complex picture of passion, stress, and resilience.

A Double-Edged Sword: Passion and Pressure

While 81% of founders enjoy the entrepreneurial journey and 66% would rather start anew than take a job, the emotional toll is significant. A staggering 86% report a negative impact on their wellbeing, with common issues including anxiety, stress, exhaustion, and burnout.

    External Factors Fueling Stress

Economic uncertainties, including inflation and fundraising challenges, are major sources of stress for African founders. These external factors, combined with the inherent pressures of running a startup, make it difficult for founders to maintain their mental and physical health.

Coping Mechanisms and the Need for Support

To cope with stress, founders often rely on exercise, personal relationships, sleep, and healthy eating. However, many still feel isolated and struggle to openly discuss their challenges. Only 14% feel fully open about their stress with others, and few seek professional help like therapy or coaching.

    The Role of Investors

The relationship between founders and investors is crucial. However, the survey revealed that many founders feel that investors add to their stress rather than alleviating it. Only 17% feel comfortable having open conversations with investors, and many believe investors don’t prioritize their wellbeing.

A Call for a More Supportive Ecosystem

To foster a healthier and more sustainable startup ecosystem, it’s essential to prioritize founder wellbeing. This includes:

    • Open Dialogue: Encourage open conversations about mental health and stress.
    • Supportive Communities: Create communities where founders can connect and share experiences.
    • Investor Empathy: Foster empathetic and supportive relationships between founders and investors.
    • Access to Mental Health Resources: Provide access to mental health professionals and coaching.

By addressing these issues, we can empower African founders to thrive and build successful, sustainable businesses.
