Amazon Web Services (AWS) has announced the selection of nine African organisations for its fourth AWS Social Entrepreneur Accelerator cohort, giving Africa the largest regional representation in this year’s global program.

The African contingent features social enterprises from Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, South Africa, Cameroon, and Tanzania. They join a broader global cohort of 42 organisations spanning 16 countries, including the USA, Australia, India, and the UK.

Delivered in collaboration with Deloitte, the accelerator provides technical training, strategic business planning, and ongoing AWS and Deloitte support to help mission-driven organisations scale their operations. Since 2023, the programme has supported more than 100 social entrepreneurs across 34 countries, uniting a global community focused on addressing urgent challenges in education, health, and climate resilience.

“Africa’s representation in this cohort reflects what we’re seeing across the continent—a generation of founders who don’t wait for conditions to be perfect. They build anyway. Our role is to ensure they have access to the same world-class cloud and AI technology as any startup in Silicon Valley, alongside the support to scale their impact across borders,” said Jyoti Ball, General Manager for Sub-Saharan Africa at AWS.

    Country Breakdown: Meet the Innovators

    Nigeria (3 Organisations)

Nigeria leads the African selection with three trailblazing organisations leveraging cloud and AI technology to tackle skills shortages, youth unemployment, and socioeconomic barriers:

Sabi Scholar: Founded by CEO Divine Iloh, the startup is creating an “operating system” for African higher education. The platform enables any university to launch online degrees in just 30 days—a potential game-changer for the continent’s population of over 200 million youth.

Kayode Alabi Leadership: Founded by Hammed Kayode Alabi, this organisation reduces inequalities by empowering underserved young people. Through transformative education and technology-driven solutions, it helps youth innovate, solve local challenges, and thrive as community changemakers.

Wetech Inc.: Founded by Gabriella Uwadiegwu, Wetech is building Africa’s largest pipeline of women in technology by providing structured pathways from training and mentorship to direct employment.

    Kenya (2 Organisations)

Kenya follows closely with two organisations focused on transforming the educational landscape:

KuzeKuze: CTO Enock Sangaka Mong’are explains that the organisation is building “education passports”—digital records that follow learners throughout their lives to make personalised education both measurable and scalable.

STEM Centre Africa (SCA): A non-profit launched in 2017 by brothers Dancun (CTO) and Denish Akoum (CEO). SCA promotes hands-on STEM education, including coding, robotics, and 3D design. Having already reached over 18,000 students—with 90% gaining proficiency in Python, Scratch, and electronics—SCA operates two centres in Homa Bay County and aims to impact 100,000 learners by 2030.

Ghana, South Africa, Cameroon, and Tanzania (1 Organisation Each)

The remaining four spots on the continent are held by foundational projects driving localized digital transformation:

Ghana | BASICS International: Founded by CEO Patricia Wilkins, this initiative breaks cycles of poverty by providing education, certified digital skills training, and holistic support to underserved children and youth.

South Africa | FunHouse Digital: Founded by Ayabulela Yokwana, this venture turns gaming lounges into self-sustaining education hubs in rural communities, where profits from gaming directly fund free coding and digital literacy programs.

Cameroon | EduCloud: Founded by Rosius Ndimofor Ateh, EduCloud delivers hands-on Cloud and AI workshops across Africa, effectively bridging the gap between academic theory and industry-ready skills.

Tanzania | Fiqra Academy: Founded by CEO Gerald Revocatus, the academy creates a direct pipeline from digital skills training to employment for East African youth, offering certifications that lead to tangible careers via their digital learning platform.

By the conclusion of the programme, the cohort will be fully equipped to build, deploy, and scale their solutions utilizing AWS cloud and AI architecture alongside specialized consulting expertise from Deloitte.
